Black and Red Quill Diawl Bach
The Diawl Bach is a great Welsh pattern. The FastMail tackle Diawl Bach variant, The Quill Diawl Bach is an absolute gem! It is tied on the Kamasan B110 curved hook. We used the quill of the eye of the peacock to give this fly a very slim, segmented profile.
If I were only able to have one fly pattern in my box this would be my choice. It has more often than not been a blank saver and a game changer for me on tough days. Again debates often arise when comparing this pattern to the natural world but it excels at mimicking several of the sub-surface aquatic insects that lurk in the depths.
As we enter June the waters of the UK are now rich with life and the Diawl Bach is a master at representing many of these little swimming bugs; be it pin fry, nymphs or even corixa the fish are feeding on, the Diawl Bach manages to fool many a fish.
Best fished: This is a very simple fly to fish, usually on a sink tip or intermediate line with a slow, steady figure of eight retrieve. The Diawl Bach always makes a fantastic member of any team of flies, usually on the top or middle droppers above your heavier point fly.
